The acceleration of eSports
The UK dipped a tenative toe into the eSports arena last weekend with a competition held at Wembley Stadium. For an old-enough-to-know-better Xbox Live addict, who’s regularly pwned (i.e. used to wipe the floor with) on Call of Duty 4 by gangs of 14-year-olds, it’s yet another sport I’ll never be good at, but for a younger generation it’s a chance to put all that misspent time to good use.
Of course, the other view is that these gamers should be out playing real sport and developing real team spirit. But given 2012 is just around the corner, and the host nation is permitted to introduce a new sport, perhaps this is a chance for Britain to dominate in something other than rowing.
